Since 2013 the government has provided extra funding with the aim of improving the Physical Education (PE) and Sports programmes offered by primary schools. The funding has been provided jointly by various governmental departments, including Education, Health and Culture, and Media and Sport.
Funding was increased in 2016-17 so each school now receives £16,000 plus £10 per pupil each year. Although the funding can only be spent on improving the provision of PE and sport, the headteacher of each school can decide how the grant is to be spent.
Purpose of funding
Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.
Possible uses for the funding might include providing places for pupils on after school sports clubs and holiday clubs to encourage regular participation in sports and promote a healthy lifestyle

- providing existing staff with teaching resources to help them teach PE and sport
- providing cover to enable teachers to attend professional development in PE/Sport
- supporting and involving the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs, holiday clubs or outside activities
- running sport competitions or increasing pupils’ participation in competitive sports
